Plan your visit: Bali
Bali combines beaches, dense towns, temples and mountainous interiors, but travel times are often longer than the map suggests. Choosing two bases is usually better than changing hotels every night.
When to go
Weather patterns vary, but the drier part of the year is generally popular. The wetter season can still be rewarding with flexible plans and protection for electronics.
Where to base yourself
- Ubud for arts, temples and access to the interior
- Sanur for a calmer coastal base
- Uluwatu area for cliffs, surf beaches and sunsets
A balanced three-day outline
- Day 1. Settle into one region and explore nearby temples, markets and local food.
- Day 2. Take a carefully routed interior day with rice landscapes and a cultural stop.
- Day 3. Spend a slower coastal day and avoid combining distant north and south attractions.
Getting around
Public transport is limited for typical visitor routes. Use reputable drivers or licensed ride services where available and allow generous time for traffic.
Practical tips
- Respect temple clothing and ceremony rules.
- Do not touch or feed wildlife.
- Check ocean conditions and local guidance before swimming or hiking.
